Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff

The inaugural Hispanic Heritage Month activity coincides with the Mexican Day of Independence! This event features live music from a mariachi band, a few words from Mexican Heritage faculty members Cesar Martinez and Guadalupe Kasper, and, of course, Mexican food! In case of rain, this event will take place in the first-floor multipurpose room in the Perkins Student Center.
Esta fecha coincide con el Día de la Independencia de México. Esta actividad, que inaugura El Mes de la Herencia Hispana, incluye música en vivo de una banda de mariachis, algunas palabras de nuestros profesores de herencia mexicana, César Martínez y Guadalupe Kasper, y, por supuesto, comida mexicana. En caso de lluvia, la ubicación será en el MPR de Perkins.
Eunice Levis Film Showcase

Join Dominican-American filmmaker Eunice Levis for a showcase of her short films followed by a discussion of her work. Light refreshments will be served.
Eunice Levis, una cineasta dominicana/americana, mostrará sus cortometrajes y ofrecerá su charla, “Pertenecemos a todas partes: la diáspora negra/latina en la ciencia ficción del cine y la televisión.” Después de la charla, habrá botanas y refrescos en el MPR de Perkins.

La Fiesta Latina is an annual event celebrating Latin heritage. With the theme of "one language; many cultures," this event features live presentations, dancing, and a taste of Latin cuisine!
Un evento anual que celebra la herencia latina, Fiesta Latina es gratis y es para estudiantes, profesores, personal universitario y la comunidad en general. Con el tema de “un idioma; muchas culturas”, el evento incluye presentaciones en vivo, seguidas con una degustación de cocina latina.

Each year, Penn State Berks welcomes regional high school students and the Berks County community to visit campus for our Latino Forum, an event that celebrates Latino heritage throughout the region. La Mega, 92.9 FM radio, will bring the energy with a remote broadcast of this event!
This year's keynote speaker is Javier Ávila, a professor of English, a poet, novelist, and public speaker. His work has earned him numerous awards, including his most recent honor as the recipient of the Cultural Arts Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education. In 2015, he was named Pennsylvania’s Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. Ávila takes his classroom to the masses, using the power of storytelling to deliver a powerful message about unity and inclusion, and takes the audience on a journey as he moves between cultures. Pizza will be served (for high schools) following the talk in the MPR. High school students, register now!
El orador principal es Javier Ávila, profesor de inglés, poeta, novelista y orador público. Su trabajo le ha valido numerosos premios, el más reciente siendo el Premio de Artes Culturales de la Asociación Americana de Hispanos en la Educación Superior. En 2015, fue nombrado Profesor del Año de Pensilvania por la Fundación Carnegie. Ávila difunde su aula al público, utilizando el poder de la narración para transmitir un poderoso mensaje sobre unidad e inclusión, y lleva a la audiencia en un viaje entre dos culturas.
